In my coaching practice it is not uncommon for new clients to have a hard time sharing with me who they are and what they want. An exercise I typically begin with is the creation of a random lists of likes. This helps to establish patterns that are often surprising.
Although I do not feel there is a universal lists that everyone needs to follow, I have found there are items which are beneficial for each of us to know and help make our lives better.
Today, I’m sharing a starter list of things every woman should know and have in their life.
A Space of Your Own
Regardless of how tiny or large, every woman needs a space in her life that is her own. When married with a family it can be difficult to create a space that is strictly your own. Having your own space provides comfort. It can be a whole room, a closet or simply a chair.
I currently have a chair in my family room that has been mine in each house regardless of where it was placed.
A Good Physician/Dentist/Therapist
This category could include every health care professional possible. Many women wait until they need a physician to find one but in today’s healthcare world, it is important to take time to research who would be best for you. Not all physicians or providers are created equal. Know what your needs are and don’t be afraid to investigate.
After my favorite physician moved out of state, I explored a few of her suggestions. It took over a year to find the best fit for my autoimmune disease but feel confident in my health care. If you are uncertain, ask friends for recommendations and don’t hesitate to leave a physican if you are not receiving good care.
A Hairstylist and Hair Style
Every woman needs to have a hairstylist that they trust. That individual who knows you well enough to know not to cut your hair when you go in on an “off day” and are asking for 6 inches cut or the person who pushes you to try a new color that is fantastic.
Michelle and I began our love affair almost 13 years ago. She’s taken me blonde, red and decided my natural dark hair is not good for my complexion. “That’s why God made hair stylists!” We’ve gone shoulder length once only to realize that WILL not happen again. (She would be giddy to take me shorter). I’ve spent hundreds of hours in her chair and loved every minute. She went on early maternity leave and I went over 16 weeks without a hair cut (I wore ponytails ALOT). She’s a keeper and we plan on being old ladies in the nursing home together.
A Uniform:
Establishing a wardrobe with basic pieces not only makes one feel good but also makes getting ready for the day much easier.
Items to consider having in your closet:
- Good tailored pants
- A bra that fits
- A little black (or Navy) dress (or any dress that you love)
- A good purse
- Shoes that make you feel like superwoman
- A piece of sentimental or significant jewlery
An Exercise Routine
An exercise routine can be regular classes at the gym or a run through the park. Knowing what you energizes you and helps you destress is significant self care.
I enjoy a good PiYo class but also benefit from a good walk or run.
A Hobby or Interest One Can Get Lost In
What do you do for fun? Do you make time for it? Everyone needs a hobby that inspires, relaxes and renews them.
This beautiful little piece of the internet has become my hobby. I also love to read, listen to music, garden, cook and the occasional Netflix binge.
A Best Friend and Tribe
Every woman needs to have friends they can call or who will call them in times of need. Our friends remind us we are not alone in this world.
Although there are people who I am closer to and share more with, I do not feel there is just one best friend. Singling one out would not be fair to anyone. God has blessed me with a variety of friends who have supported and lifted me up. They know who they are!
A Cause You Are Passionate About
Be educated and able to share with others your passion. Volunteer, donate money and advocate. Individually, each of us make a difference.
Although I do not work full time in the field of hospice and palliative care anymore, it remains a passion that I reguarly discuss with others.
A Go To Drink
Often ordering a drink or cocktail can be overwhelming at a new restaurant. It’s helpful to establish a go to drink that one knows will be good and can be found most anywhere.
For myself, I always know a glass of Pinot Noir will be what I need. However, I’ve also learned to appreciate a good Bourbon Cocktail (I do live in Kentucky) such as an Old Fashioned.
A Theme Song
Having a theme song can promote confidence, strength and immediately improve a mood.
I have my theme song of Sia’s Titanium rotated throughout my workout playlist along with a few versions of Stronger by Britney Spears.
Sometimes questions such as the ones above can seem trivial. However, if we don’t know and understand the simple things about ourselves, how can we know the complex and complicated. Take some time to begin your own list.
What are your ten things? I would love to hear them and if you write a post, please let me know!
