Someone Would Love Your Life: Perspectives for when life seems overwhelming

During your days of existing, being annoyed  about laundry/groceries/ housecleaning and sometimes just struggling; have you ever stopped to consider that someone would love to have the life you have right now?

I am a regular practitioner of gratitude and being aware of the blessings and good things in my life. However, I am also human (as are you), and there have been days recently where I haven’t felt good, co workers have annoyed me, responsibilities have been many and I have felt like walking away (the beach is always my go to place).

A few weeks ago my husband and I had tickets to a University of Kentucky basketball game at Rupp Arena in Lexington, Kentucky. Due to television, the game didn’t start until 9:00 PM. My work life typically begins at 5:00 am which means I am in bed no later than 10:00. Throughout the day I had thoughts of not wanting to go. James was working until 7 and we would need to coordinate meeting to go downtown. It didn’t seem worth it.

And somewhere during the day I realized how lucky I was to have tickets to a University of Kentucky basketball game. This event that I was becoming annoyed at was actually something someone else would give everything to have the opportunity for.

For those not well versed in the history of Kentucky basketball, I need to share a little background.  The state of Kentucky does not have a professional athletic team. Instead, we have been blessed with the most successful college basketball program in the country that includes 8 national titles.  Kentucky basketball is an experience. Think Alabama football, Green Bay Packers and Chicago Cubs. Kentucky basketball pulls the state together. Games are watched with friends in bars, sometimes alone at home and many dream of tickets to Rupp Arena.

As I sat that Tuesday night underneath the banners, I reminded myself that there was a little boy or girl or a faithful elderly fan who would love the chance to be where I was sitting.

We easily take our lives for granted and can become disenchanted with what we have. It is easy to see what we don’t have but not as easy to acknowledge what we do have.

I’ve often thought that my life is not anything that anyone would aspire to have. Over the years, I have had comments from others proving otherwise.

Everyone can complain about their life. Sometimes we need to vent and complain. There isn’t enough time. The weight won’t come off. The boss doesn’t understand. The kids have too many activities. We don’t feel well.

  • I don’t like that I have to wear closed toe shoes at my two day a week hospital job. I am aware that someone else would love to have a job where they set their hours.
  • I struggle daily with the fact my autoimmune issues are thinning my hair. There is someone diagnosed with cancer who has lost their hair completely and also is struggling with the question if their treatment will be a cure.
  • After six years of living in our home, it is time to begin the process of repainting and basic upkeep. There are those who do not own a home and can not imagine this worry.
  • We continue to make payments on my car. There are families who struggle in having one functioning car.
  • I struggle with finding the time to spend with all of my friends and sometimes get aggravated in scheduling. Loneliness is one of the biggest issues that individuals face in this world and the truth is I am blessed to have so many people to call and reach out to.

I could continue to create a list of things in life that I wish I had. It is important to have goals and to continuing achieving. At the same time, it is equally important to recognize where I am at is not a bad place to be.

PS: That 9:00 PM basketball game went into overtime. Thankfully UK won. I didn’t get into bed until 12:30 am and I don’t regret a thing.

Do you think others would love the life you are currently living?
