Do you have a space in your life that is not only specifically yours but that is a place of calm and refuge?
So many of us share our homes with roommates and spouses, children and pets that even if we once had a dedicated space, it can easily lose its’ purpose. Today I want to share why you need an area of refuge in your life and encourage you to create this space regardless of the size.
With our hectic and busy lives, it is important to have an area of our life where we can breathe and recognize as our own. Although I loved our recent vacation, on our way home, all I could think about was simply being home. After returning home, I became sick and for several days I didn’t feel like leaving the house. My home had become a cocoon and was a refuge to return to after a day at work. As I recuperated, I found refuge in our family room couch and the recliner in my husband’s man cave (he does let me use it).
A place of refuge is where you can simply be. In this space you are welcomed and comforted and do not have to worry about putting forth extra energy. This is a space of renewal due to not only what you may be able to do in the space (journal, meditate, listen to music or read) but also by the physical space.
Without a place of refuge, the world can be a difficult place to function.
Without a place of refuge, there is no time to rebalance.
Without a place of refuge, one forgets the comfort of calm.
It is important to note that a place of refuge does not have to be in your home. I recently shared how my local Starbucks helped me grieve and was very much a place of refuge during my early grief. As I look back over my life, there have been many other places of refuge including my Nanny’s porch when I was little, my walk in closet and the car I owned for my first job and had to drive 45 minutes to work.
I have heard others share their places of refuge have included going to a museum, a park or even their bathroom (hello, bubble bath). Others feel their place of refuge is someplace to escape to such as a cabin in the mountains or at the beach. My husband shared that for him having his headphones and music can take him to a place of refuge regardless of where he is.
Today I want you to try this at home and encourage you to consider if you have a place of refuge in your life? What makes is a place of refuge? How often do you find yourself there.
Let me know where your refugee is.
