Have you been in situations where you could feel the energy of those in the room?
Are there people over the holidays that you are dreading spending time with? Have there been events where you expected negativity from others and in fact experienced it. Most everyone has had an experience of the difficult relative or the negative friend. However, have you ever thought that you might be THAT person who others consider negative, pessimistic or difficult?
Today I want to share the wonderful quote above that I discovered after watching this Oprah interview with Jill Bolte Taylor. Jill was a brain scientist who suffered a stroke which completely imparted the left hemisphere of her brain. This hemisphere focused upon the past and future while the right hemisphere focuses upon the present. She entered each moment completely in the present with no recollection of past events or moments. What she became aware of during this time was the energy of physicians, nurses and everyone who came to treat here. All she could focus upon was what energy each individual brought into the room. You may want to take some time to watch the short video.
As someone who works in healthcare and counsels clients, I attempt to be aware of the energy I have each day. However, I openly acknowledge there have been many times when my energy has not been good.
It can be all too easy to complain about others being rude, insensitive and uncaring. I feel it is equally important to consider how others are responding to the energy we each bring into a situation. When we expect someone to be difficult we automatically change our demeanor and tone. If you are expecting your Christmas gathering to be difficult, the energy you bring will demonstrate it. If you are angry that you must be at an early morning meeting, there is a possiblity that others will know it by your actions.
I am realistic that we are each human and have bad days. We deal with the stress of daily life and we can’t help but feel overwhelmed when we are sick or worried. There will be times when our energy will feel as if it’s in 100 different places. Nonetheless, be responsible for the energy that you bring. If you are tired, recognize your need to rest. If you are angry at a situation or individual, consider what you need to do to let go of that energy. Take some time to consider how you are feeling about situations and how you are viewing life.
Realize that others will feed off of that energy. Yes, others may be angry or depressed but realize that is their choice. Although there are times when you can not control who you are around, you can control how you respond.
My challenge for you through the holidays and the upcoming year is to take responsibility of the energy you bring. Acknowledge how your energy makes you feel and how others respond to you. You are responsible for the energy you bring to each situation.
Are you aware of the energy of others and yourself? How will you take responsibility?
